What Is It? #
The term “Dual Delivery” refers to the simultaneous teaching of students physically in-class and students online at home. Instructors will teach from upgraded classrooms on the Lower Level of the South Building or similarly-appointed classrooms in the North Building. The documents in this section explore both pedagogical and technical considerations for teaching a dual delivery course. In many ways, dual delivery teaching is identical to traditional in-classroom teaching. Many of the considerations in the following documents relate to creating an environment that gives equal priority to both sets of students. This includes the way that learning activities are planned (e.g. how will students at home and online join breakout rooms), how participation and engagement are fostered (can multiple means of participating be woven into the course structure?), and how assessments are designed (students in each mode should be assessed in equitable ways).
You are not alone in this. There are many staff members and fellow instructors who are keen to share their knowledge and experiences.
Who Will Be Supporting Instructors? #
There are four primary supports:
- A specially-trained Dual Delivery Moderator. The Moderator will act as the instructor’s co-pilot and will assist with the delivery of each class and is responsible for equipment setup, managing the online group (e.g. troubleshooting technical problems, calling on students with their hands raised at appropriate times, monitoring the online chat, voicing question/comments as they arise, etc.), and generally assisting with the technical aspects of running a dual delivery class.
- The A/V Office. As usual, A/V staff on the Lower Level of the South building will provide real-time support for all classroom technology.
- Rotman Digital staff will assist with technical solutions to teaching needs and provide advice on instructional design.
- Speak with your peers. Learning from fellow instructors is a valuable way of improving your teaching.
